North of Normal

We are a brand, inspirational community and education company for active living Type 1 Diabetics and anyone who has faced obstacles in life but are finding healthy ways to thrive despite them.

Why North of Normal?

"I noticed that most of my peers in "Gen Z" believed that fitting in and doing the bare minimum was the cool thing to do. And when obstacles would come up in their life, they chose to cope with them with unhealthy behavior, substances, partying, and toxic relationships. However, these were merely distractions from their real life and real potential. Once in a while, I would find "North of Normal" people, often older than me, who yearned for more in life than the average.  I chose to create my own path, and each day I kept striving to find my way. Eventually, I found my passion: bringing together a community of North of Normal people who put physical and mental health first and chose to rise above "Normal."

Wyatt's story

"At ten years old, my mom and I found my grandma dead from a fatal heart attack in her kitchen. A little over a year later, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after spending 4 days in Intensive Care, at Children's Hospital, with severe Ketoacidosis and a blood sugar of over 800mg./dl (normal is 120mg/dl).

A few years later, I unexpectedly lost my grandpa and two high school friends. Once I had graduated, my other two grandparents fell ill, one being a type 1 diabetic. Due to complications with her condition and failing to reach her endocrinologist after being discharged from the hospital, I was in charge of her diabetes and therefore her life for nearly a month.

All of this was happening as every day, myself and my family were trying to figure out how to manage my Type 1 Diabetes as a competitive athlete and high achieving student.

All of these events of loss, stress and change forced me to a place very different from normal kids my age. Most of my peers had no idea what I faced on a daily basis. The obstacles and challenges I've faced in my short life have forced me to become comfortable living somewhere North of Normal. However, these unusual circumstances have helped me discover that North of Normal hasn't been a hinderance in my life but instead a catalyst for my growth, happiness, health and success.

North of Normal was born out of this realization and has made me contemplate what I would leave behind and what my purpose was.  And it's to show anyone that even when life forces you into a new normal, you can still choose to create your own path and DECIDE to thrive despite your obstacles --North of Normal is what makes you stronger.

How is Type 1 Diabetes different than the more common and curable, Type 2 Diabetes?
